The Educational Clearinghouse of the ASE was established in September, 1983 and is based at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine. The Clearinghouse serves the
#01.015 Surgical Educators' Handbook. Developed by the ASE Curriculum Committee, this handbook was written by surgical educators for surgeons, residents and all others dealing with surgical education. Designed in a case-based format, the editors compiled a set of FAQs that were answered by the contributors. These were grouped into sections on Faculty Development, Research in Education, Essentials for Residency Program Directors, Student & Resident Assessment, Essentials for Clerkship Directors and Curriculum/Teaching. All chapters are followed by references and/or resources. 176 pp., 2002.
#01.017 Surgical Simulation: Box-Trainer to the Human Simulator. This DVD set is a recording of the Association for Surgical Education (ASE) Simulation Committee Workshop “The Current Status and Future of Surgical Simulation: From the Box-Trainer to the Human Simulator” and provides guidelines for running a successful skills laboratory, for implementing effective skills curricula and augmenting them, for incorporating patient simulation and team training into the surgery curriculum. The Educational Institute requirements of the American College of Surgeons are referenced, the modules of the APDS national skills curriculum are presented and the resources and personnel needed are identified.
Objectives:
The DVD is divided in two 90 minute sessions, one focusing on procedural skills and one on patient simulation and team training. Target audience includes surgeons and other health care providers interested in simulation. Participants will have the opportunity to interact with experts in the field and exchange ideas. At the end of this workshop, the newly acquired knowledge will allow participants to improve their skills laboratories and develop effective simulator curricula for their residents and students.

#04.021 A Guidebook for Coordinating a Surgical ClerkshipThe purpose of this handbook is to serve as a guide and resource for an individual responsible for the coordination of a surgical education program. The handbook will discuss the necessary skills and abilities it takes to run a successful and enjoyable clerkship for medical students. It will also provide some ideas on how to attract and retain students’ interest in surgery.

#06.037 A Few Small Moments may be thought of as memoir written in the form of short stories. The author, Carol Scott-Conner MD PhD, is professor of surgery and former Head of Surgery at the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine. She was the second woman in the history of American surgery to attain the position of chair of a major department of surgery. These stories are set in the surgical service of a major teaching hospital. Each story explores a “few small moments” in the intimate space in which surgeon and patient, surgeon and colleague, or professor and student come together. The book concludes with a section for students interested in pursuing a career in surgery.
