  • Study current teaching/assessment measures relative to ACGME competencies
  • Objectify assessment process by adopting/adapting available measures or creating new measures
  • Audit: Tune up system and revise, as needed, based on evidence
  • Plan: Infrastructure and resource issues associated with competency-based education

Two ready-to-use teaching modules designed to enhance faculty's understanding and ability to systematically design and evaluate residency education are provided on the CD. Each module was designed to utilize the modified SOAP format to teach about designing competency-based education. However, each module is targeted to different audiences.

  • Module 1 is intended for a general faculty audience and can be presented in approximately 40 minutes with time for questions/discussion.
  • Module 2 is intended for individuals who have primary responsibility for residency education including residency program directors, curriculum/assessment committee members, and coordinators. #06.035 Coaching Standardized Patients for Use in the Assessment of Clinical Competence. In today's medical education curriculum it is necessary for students to learn the proper techniques for taking medical histories, performing physical exams, and the appropriate way to educate and inform patients. The best way for a student to learn these skills is through hands-on training with a Standardized Patient (SP). This type of training allows students to grasp concepts more quickly and enables faculty physicians to directly observe student's progress and asses their need for further instruction.

As with any tool that is used for teaching, assessment, and certification, it is easier to provide the best service when there are general guidelines for preparers to follow. This handbook is intended as that guide and as a support for those who are involved in training Standardized Patients, from the art of coaching through preparing SP's for the physical exam, to encourage each coach to develop a system that will deliver the best results and, in the end, help train the most competent doctors.

The book is divided into two sections: Coaching Competencies: Developing the Skill Sets Needed for Coaching Standardized Patients and Training Procedures: Finding and Training the Standardized Patients

352 pp., Peggy Wallace, PhD, Springer Publishing, 2006.
This publication can be ordered directly from Springer Publishing at www.springerpub.com. ISBN #0-8261-0224-7. Price $60.00
