Patricia Numann, MD, FACS, Scholarship for LMIC Surgical Educators

Empowering Educators through International Collaboration

The ASE Foundation is excited to announce a new grant program that is intended to support surgical educators from low-income countries by providing opportunities for professional development, collaboration, and contribution to the global surgical education community. The program aims to enhance educational infrastructure and foster partnerships between international scholars and established institutions. This grant program will create a significant opportunity for surgical educators from low-middle income countries to enhance their skills, contribute to the global surgical education community, and bring back valuable knowledge and experiences to their home institutions and countries/regions. Through international collaboration and mentorship, the program aims to create lasting partnerships and improve surgical education worldwide.

We are initiating fundraising that will allow us to endow the Numman Scholarship in Spring of 2029 with a goal of $100,000 over the next four years. We hope that you will consider joining us in this innovative effort.

Program Overview

Objective

The primary goal of the Numann Scholarship is to enable surgical educators from LMICs to engage in immersive, mentored experiences at institutions recognized for excellence in surgical education. During their placement, recipients will undertake a focused project—modeled after the ASE Surgical Education Research Fellowship (SERF)—with the goal of presenting at a major meeting or publishing their work.

Institution Placement

Participants will have the flexibility to shape their own professional development experience. The program supports:

  • Placement at leading institutions with strong surgical education programs
  • Attendance at key meetings such as ASE/APDS or Surgeons as Educators

Mentored Project

Each recipient will complete a mentored project focused on surgical education. Experienced ASE mentors will provide support and guidance to help participants achieve measurable outcomes, such as:

  • A scholarly publication
  • Presentation at an international surgical education conference

Partnership and Collaboration

To foster a welcoming and collaborative experience, recipients will be paired with an ASE leader or past leader through a “buddy system,” modeled on the ACS International Scholars Program. This personalized support will facilitate networking, knowledge-sharing, and deeper integration into the ASE community.

A Vision for Global Impact

The Numann Scholarship provides an invaluable opportunity for surgical educators in LMICs to:

  • Advance their teaching and research skills
  • Build global networks
  • Share and apply knowledge within their home institutions and regions
