ACS Fundamentals of Surgery Curriculum

Table #25
Website
ACS Fundamentals of Surgery Curriculum (ACS FSC) is a highly interactive, case-based, online curriculum that addresses the essential content areas that all surgical residents need to master in the early years of training. ACS FSC, sold to medical residency programs for distribution to their first-year residents, includes over 108 case-based scenarios in which residents learn to recognize symptoms and signs, order appropriate tests and procedures, evaluate data, and initiate appropriate actions.

ACS Cognitive Simulations: Cases Essential to Surgical Practice (ACS CogSim) uses the proven educational methods of the ACS Fundamentals of Surgery Curriculum® to teach PGY-3+ surgical residents how to approach complex decision-making and management of surgical problems. As residents navigate these cases from preoperative assessment to perioperative care and management, including complications, they are given feedback for each choice they make to reinforce learning. ACS CogSim is sold to residency programs for distribution to their residents and allows programs to monitor progress.

American Board of Surgery and SCORE
Table #12
Website (ABS)
Website (SCORE)
The American Board of Surgery (ABS) is an independent, nonprofit organization founded in 1937 for the purpose of certifying individuals who have met a defined standard of education, training, and knowledge in the field of surgery. Surgeons certified by the ABS have completed at least five years of surgical training following medical school and successfully completed a written and oral examination process administered by the ABS. They must then maintain their board certification through ongoing learning and practice improvement activities. One of the 24 member boards of the American Board of Medical Specialties, the ABS offers board certification in general surgery, vascular surgery, pediatric surgery, surgical critical care, and complex general surgical oncology.

The Surgical Council on Resident Education (SCORE) was formed in 2006 as a nonprofit consortium by the principal organizations involved in U.S. surgical education, with a mission to improve the education of residents in general surgery and related specialties through the development of a national curriculum. SCORE’s primary feature, the SCORE Portal, delivers educational content aligned with the curriculum to residents, fellows, and training programs. The SCORE Curriculum is designed to define the various surgical specialties and provide greater assurance that residents and fellowship trainees are receiving sufficient training in all areas. In addition to the original SCORE Curriculum for General Surgery, SCORE’s offerings have grown to include curriculums for vascular surgery, pediatric surgery, surgical critical care, surgical oncology, and endocrine surgery. In 2019, SCORE merged with the ABS.

Table #6
Website
STOPS Medical is dedicated and focused on maximizing training value by outfitting medical providers with essential training products to accomplish lifesaving goals. By designing medical simulation and training products that are user-repairable, usage and cost effectiveness are maximized while minimizing out of service time for proprietary manufacturer repairs and costly expendable replacement supplies.

Drawing upon advances in medical modeling and simulation over the last few years, STOPS Medical has brought unprecedented realism to military and first responder training. The introduction of “Hollywood-style” special effects has enabled training scenarios to achieve such a high degree of fidelity in replicating the “fog of war” that participants “willingly suspend disbelief” that they are not in a real situation. For example, our Cut Suit (CS) with Advanced Surgical Skills Packages (ASSP) combine to create the world’s only Hyper-Realistic® Open Surgical Simulation System (OS3) such that surgeons willingly suspend disbelief that they are not working on a live human.

Her program called The Well-Being Accelerator focuses on measurable outcomes such as improved ACGME survey results, decreased attrition, reduced conflict, and enhanced learning environments. Through departmental assessments, coaching, and strategic planning, she helps programs cultivate sustainable cultures of well-being without sacrificing the intensity and discipline that surgical training demands.
