Dr. Shruti Koti is a general surgery resident at Northwell Health in New York. She is passionate about palliative care, surgical education, and medical humanities, and is currently spending 2 years of dedicated professional development time conducting pancreatic cancer research and contributing to surgical education endeavors.
In 2017, the ACGME added the following requirement: “Resident education must occur in the context of a learning and working environment that emphasizes…commitment to the well-being of the students, residents, faculty and all members of the healthcare team.” Join us as we meet Dr. Shruti Koti and learn how she and her team initiated a successful faculty and department-supported Palliative Care Curriculum at Northwell Health in New York. Surgical residency is inherently difficult. Her training program is building communication skills and reshaping the surgical culture. In this conversation with Dr. Koti, we explore the need to invest in personal growth and reflect on clinical experiences as that is what makes us the best surgeons possible, not only for our own sake but for our patients for many years to come.
