SELF
Director:
An ASE member who is either an Education Scientist with a PhD or EdD in an education related discipline (preferred) or a Physician Educator with a master’s in education. Â The ideal candidate will have held ASE membership for greater than five years, have extensive experience in faculty development of teaching and leadership, apply effective strategies to engage learners when presenting, and appropriately dedicate time to organizing, implementing, and leading the SELF program. Working collaboratively with other SELF faculty and members of the ASE Board is essential.
The Director will serve a 5-year term with the opportunity for reappointment for a second 5-year term. There would be a one-year transition period which would begin in fall of 2025 and the new Director’s term would begin fall of 2026 and end in spring 2031. The expected time commitment is roughly 100 hours per year which includes presenting and facilitating at Surgical Education Week, 75 minute monthly virtual sessions, advising hours, application review, and initial design of the program.
The incumbent will be selected by a selection panel including the current SELF Director and members of the current SELF faculty and be approved by the ASE President and ASE Board of Directors.
Associate Director:
The ideal candidate will will be a Physician Educator to compliment an Education Scientist Director and have held ASE membership for greater than five years, have extensive experience in faculty development of teaching, and apply effective strategies to engage learners when presenting. Working collaboratively with SELF Director and members of the ASE Board is essential. Â This person will also serve as an advisor for at least one SELFer and assist the SELF Director with any curricular or programmatic issues. Â The Associate Director will serve a 4-year term with the opportunity for reappointment for a second 4-year term at the recommendation of the SELF Director and approval of the ASE President. There would be a one-year transition period which would begin in fall of 2025 and the new Associate Director’s term would begin fall of 2026 and end in spring 2030.
