Mental Skills Training to Make Your Average Performance Excellent: Participation in the Indiana University Mental Skills Curriculum

Description of Course:

Attendees of this workshop will be taught our well-researched mental skills curriculum over a period of 4 hours. Through an engaging presentation, interactive discussion among attendees, and applied practice of mental skills throughout the entire workshop, learners will obtain the needed skills to reduce their stress during clinical performance and optimize their performance.

Strategic Plan:

This proposal addresses goal 5 of the ASE needs assessment, as it endeavors to disseminate an innovative product to advance the field of surgical education. Specifically, given the impact of excessive acute stress on surgical performance, and subsequently, the negative impact of surgical errors on surgeons’ wellbeing, mental skills designed to optimize stress levels and enhance performance will positively impact surgeons’ wellbeing.

Measurement/Outcomes/Impact: How will the success of the project be measured against the objectives listed above?

Participants will be given a brief (5 minute) multiple-choice assessment prior to- and following the workshop to explore their understanding about stress and its impact on surgical performance. Open ended questions will also explore participants’ use of adaptive or maladaptive coping skills in response to stress. Finally, participants will be observed and engaged in discussion while applying mental skills during ATLAS simulation training. These methods will enable the course instructors to document whether participants are actively utilizing mental skills during training. Finally, participants will be surveyed 3-6 months post-course attendance to determine if they have applied mental skills in their practice/training learners.

Measurement/Outcomes/Impact: What outcomes, if met, will demonstrate project success?

Post-workshop performance of 80% or above on the multiple-choice assessment and consideration of adaptive coping skills in response to stress (i.e., measured through open-ended responses), and documented use of mental skills use during ATLAS simulation training will demonstrate project success. For the follow up course survey, more than 50% of participants indicating use of mental skills in their practice/training of learners will demonstrate success of the project.

Measurement/Outcomes/Impact: Describe the impact you expect this project will have on the organization and surgical education in general?

Despite evidence of the effectiveness of mental skills to limit skill decay under excessive stress, implementation of mental skills in surgical training programs is nascent. Delivery of our curriculum as part of an ASE pre-conference workshop will encourage broader implementation of these novel strategies in surgical education.

Budget

Audio/Visual- Screen and projector: $800
CME: 4x$300 = $1,200
Food- Breakfast @ $55 per person: $55 x 15 = $825
Coffee: $500
Mental skills workbook: $15 x 15 = $225
Total: $3,550

Will CME be offered for Proposed Pre-Meeting Course?

Yes, CME will be offered.

Registration Fee for Proposed Pre-Meeting Course:

$250.00

If not selected as a Pre-Meeting Course, are you interested in converting the topic to a Workshop or Panel?

Yes

Please briefly explain how you would convert into either a Panel (60 minutes) or Workshop (90 minutes)

We would be willing to convert this proposal to a 90 minute workshop by reducing the amount of didactics and removing the applied practice of mental skills during simulator training. We have delivered this workshop in this format at previous ASE meetings.
