Policy for Conducting Survey Research of ASE Members

The Association for Surgical Education (ASE) Surgical Education Research Committee (SERC) has been charged by the Executive Committee (EC) to develop a process for the distribution of research surveys to its membership. This process ensures that members avoid survey fatigue and that only research studies with high-quality methodology and significant potential to address a need in surgical education research are selected to be distributed to membership.  Priority will be given in the following order:

  • ASE committee projects
  • Projects in which the lead investigator is an ASE member
  • Projects in which an ASE member is a co-investigator
  • Projects from other professional societies with a relationship to ASE

Prior to considerations, researchers will obtain IRB approval and submit a document which contains the following:

  1. Name of the Survey/Study
  2. Lead Investigator name, title(s) and institutional affiliation and if ASE member (include contact information)
  3. Co-Investigator(s) and if ASE member(s)
  4. Identify any funding source and/or conflicts of interest
  5. Association with an organization and/or committee (e.g. ASE committee)
  6. IRB approval letter
  7. Brief summary of the intent and aims (maximum ½ page)
  8. 3-4 sentence paragraph of how this study benefits the mission of ASE and/or its members
  9. PDF document of the survey

All requests for surveys will be sent to [email protected] and will subsequently be reviewed by the SERC or a sub-committee. After approval by SERC, final approval will be obtained from the ASE Executive Committee prior to distribution. To prevent survey fatigue, the distribution of surveys will be spaced out and limited in number each quarter. Every effort will be made to respond to each request within 1 month.

Fees:
Upon approval and if the lead investigator is an ASE member, a $150 fee will be paid to ASE prior to the distribution of the survey to its membership. If the lead investigator is not an ASE member, the fee will be $350. The fee will cover the initial email and one reminder. Fees will be waived for approved ASE Committee surveys or as determined by SERC/EC.
