Association for Surgical Education Visiting Scholar

The ASE Visiting Scholar Fellowship is a new initiative that offers an ASE member in good standing the opportunity to visit other surgical programs in the United States.  This $3500 travel grant can be used to foster communication, knowledge-sharing, and collaboration amongst ASE members with the ultimate goal of advancing surgical education initiatives, identifying opportunities for joint ventures, and sharing new ideas and concepts across the ASE membership.

Applicants may select one to two (1-2) programs to visit.  The duration of stay is flexible but should likely fall between one to three (1-3) days per institution.  Time spent between institutions need not be consecutive but must be completed within the same year.  The goals of the visit must be clearly delineated as well as a description of any events/courses of interest that will take place during the proposed visit: ie, intern boot camp, interprofessional team training activity, faculty development course, EPA assessment, etc.  These goals should be agreed upon by both the visiting scholar and the host institution.

Upon completion of travel, the award recipient will be required to submit a written summary to the ASE Visiting Scholar Fellowship Task Force describing the reason for the visit, lessons learned, and any plans for future implementation of new ideas/programs.  In addition, the award recipient will be required to report on his/her experiences at the annual ASE meeting in 2021.
