WS41 - 06: USING MEDEDPORTAL AS A RESOURCE FOR CURRICULUM DEVELOPMENT

Committee on Curriculum

Anecdotal reports suggest that clinical authors of educational materials for surgical trainees often develop their curricula on an as-needed, just-in-time basis, without necessarily applying scholarly criteria to their work (e.g. Glassick). As a result, there can be a lack of congruence between the desired and actual outcomes, even if objectives are reasonably specified, and outcomes are amenable to reasonably accurate determination.

MedEdPORTAL (the AAMC journal of teaching and learning resources) is a rich repository of educational materials for health profession practitioners and trainees. Resources are peer reviewed, demonstrate scholarly rigor, and are freely available online.

This workshop will provide participants the knowledge and skills to

Define objectives for a curricular component (in SMART terms)
Locate in MedEdPORTAL resources that satisfy at least some of the defined objectives
Integrate the chosen MedEdPORTAL resources into a fully developed curricular component, including at a minimum a facially valid assessment instrument

Although this workshop will focus on MedEdPORTAL as a resource for curricular components, many of the skills acquired in this workshop will be generalizable to other resource repositories.

Limited support will be available to participants to complete projects at their home institutions.
