WS42 - 04: CAREER PATHS AND MENTORING FOR PROFESSIONAL EDUCATORS IN SURGICAL EDUCATION: A WORKSHOP PRESENTED BY THE COMMITTEES ON EDUCATION RESEARCH, ASSESSMENT AND EVALUATION AND FACULTY DEVELOPMENT

Background: Primary masters or doctoral trained educators are an integral part of the Surgical Education community.  While many of these professionals are embedded in clinical departments, they rarely interact with surgeons during graduate or post-graduate studies.  As such, their backgrounds in disciplines such as Education, Psychology, Sociology, or Human Factors may be very relevant to the field of Surgical Education, but the application of their perspectives and skills is diverse and sometimes challenging in clinical departments.  The ASE has a number of successful Professional Educators who can provide guidance and mentorship based on their experiences and established models of faculty development.

Audience: This workshop targets early-career Professional Educators such as recent graduates, current degree candidates or individuals from other fields who are transitioning to work with departments of surgery.  Educators such as masters trained researchers, administrators, or nurse educators are also encouraged to attend. 

Goals: This workshop serves as a forum for early-career educators to receive guidance on their professional development.  Academic productivity, promotion/tenure, and inter-professional collaboration will be the primary topics.

Format of workshop: A panel of ASE PhD educators from different institutions, each with very different career paths and at varied points in their respective careers will describe their own experiences.  Building on these examples, workshop participants will construct individualized lists of professional goals and existing challenges.  Panelists will address these lists and collaboratively provide guidance and solutions to further the professional growth of workshop participants.

Proposed Outcomes: In addition to the direct guidance from the mentorship panel, participants will be offered two opportunities post workshop for further development: 1) Participants will be given an opportunity for individual phone consultation with one of the panelists 3 months following the workshop and 2) Participants will be invited to complete a survey or interview within 6-12 months following the workshop to see how the workshop content and consultation may have influenced their perspectives, roles, or relationships within their respective departments.  This information, along with the discussion from the panel will form the substance of a manuscript to be submitted for publication.
