Workshop Proposal from the Technology Education Committee

In a recent ASE Education Technology Committee survey, 67% of respondents indicated a need for workshops focusing on how to use audience response systems and how to include multiple media sources in didactic presentations. On completion of this workshop, attendees will have obtained knowledge and developed skills in the appropriate implementation of these technologies; this will result in enhanced effectiveness of their future presentations.

This workshop was offered at the ASE 2017 meeting and was extremely well received.  Based on requests from participants who could not attend and those that attended but wanted to learn even more, we would like to offer an updated version of the workshop.

We will start with a presentation of our topics in order to give participants an overview of the workshop and some basic information on three areas: Presie (a PowerPoint alterative), Poll Anywhere, and Imbedded Videos.  After the initial presentation last year the participants were split into three groups for a hands-on lesson in creating a talk using these tools.  We had intended to have each participant rotate through each station and have the opportunity to try everything.  However, due to the high attendance and the enthusiasm of the participants in mastering each topic, most participants only had time to do one or two stations.

Based on the feedback and logistics from last year, we are excited to offer the workshop again, but with a different design.  We will inform participants ahead of time that they should pick a first and second choice technology to focus on. They will still have the chance to learn about all three topics during the introductory presentation but we will plan to spend more time with each group to be sure they have mastered the topic.  In addition, we will prepare more stations with committee members so that we can have smaller groups. At the end of the workshop members will feel confident in using 1-2 of these types of educational technologies in their medical education endeavours.
